VMI’s first Black superintendent is under attack by conservative white alumni — The Washington Post
apple.news • 1 min read
VMI is a publicly funded institution that has a well funded alumni group dedicated to resisting change — changes that break the tradition of ties to the Confederacy and racial injustice. Instead they are attacking VMI’s first Black Superintendent who is also an alumnus. Even more insidious, some of this alumni group are also former (and possibly current) military members. In 2021, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called out racial extremism in the military but while so-called extremism can be couched by many as the beliefs by a few bad actors, the truth is that racial injustice remains to a challenge within military culture. Black military members and veterans have shared revealing insights in my discussion on this and other topics for my upcoming book. I invite Black VMI alumni to join the conversation about Black veterans navigating racial injustice and patriotism in the military. Schedule a time using the link https://lnkd.in/eAvys5SH
