What happens when Black veterans’ service to the country collides with systemic racism embedded within the very institutions they’ve sworn to defend?

I’m proud to announce the publication of my new book, “Black Veteranality: Military Service and the Illusion of Inclusive Patriotism. “Through rigorous research and personal experience, my book examines the critical intersection of race, veteran identity, and patriotism in America. It is the first in a series I call Combating the American Paradox, which examines the intersection of military service, racial identity, and democratic ideals. At this intersection lies a robust framework for reimagining American society.

As a Black veteran who has navigated these complex waters personally, this research represents scholarly investigation and lived experience. The concept of “veteranality” provides a new theoretical framework for understanding how military service shapes identity formation within marginalized communities.

Readers will discover how performative inclusivity in military contexts often masks more profound structural inequalities, creating what I call the “patriotic paradox” for Black service members.
